A hose clamp’s job is simple: hold a hose securely onto a fitting without leaking or cutting into the hose. Choosing the right one comes down to three things – the clamp type, the corrosion grade, and the size.
Clamp types
- Worm-drive (Jubilee-style) – a slotted band tightened by a screw. The general-purpose choice for low and medium-pressure hose, with a wide adjustment range. The most common clamp.
- T-bolt – a solid band tensioned by a bolt, giving higher and more even clamping force. Suited to larger or higher-pressure hose, turbo and industrial use.
- Spring (constant-tension) – keeps tension as the hose expands and contracts with temperature, so it’s popular on coolant lines.
- Ear clamp (Oetiker-style) – a single-use clamp crimped at the “ear”. Clean, low-profile and permanent.
- P-clamp (cushioned) – not a sealing clamp. A rubber-lined clamp that secures and routes hose or pipe against a surface.
What do the W1 to W5 grades mean?
The W rating describes the clamp’s materials and corrosion resistance:
| Grade | Material | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| W1 | Zinc-plated steel | General, dry indoor use |
| W2 / W3 | Part stainless (stainless band, plated screw) | Light outdoor / damp |
| W4 | Fully 304 stainless steel | Outdoor, wash-down, food-grade |
| W5 | Fully 316 stainless steel | Marine, chemical, maximum corrosion resistance |
How to size a clamp
Measure the outside diameter of the hose where it sits over the fitting, then choose a clamp whose adjustment range brackets that diameter – ideally near the middle of its range, not at the very end. Tighten until the hose seals, but not so hard that the band bites into or deforms the hose.
Matching the clamp to the job
- Pressure: worm-drive for low and medium pressure; T-bolt for higher pressure or large bores.
- Environment: W1 for dry indoor; step up to W4 (304) or W5 (316) stainless for outdoor, marine or chemical exposure.
- Permanent vs serviceable: ear clamps are single-use; worm-drive and T-bolt can be loosened and reused.

For low-pressure hose, a clamp is paired with a barbed tail – see our guide on hose tails and end fittings.
